Greg and Helaine Walton have served in Guatemala, Central America for the last 23 years. They currently live in the town of Canilla, Quiche with their three daughters Gigi, Bella and Nia. The Walton’s ministry is called Association Alas and is a nationally registered non profit organization which currently has projects in different regions throughout the Quiche region serving theindigenous Mayan populations. Among the variousinitiatives that Alas oversees are included a rural Christcentered high school, a full time home for adults with disabilities, a home for single mothers with children and a Special Education and Therapy centre that serves adultsand children with Special Needs.
With a focus on the marginalized and the poor the ministry reaches out to children and adults with disabilities, widows, single mothers and families in crisis. All of the ministry staff area former students and/or local nationals and a strong emphasis is based on transformation and discipleship. As part of a Kingdom model of biblical unity, Alas works closely with other ministries and with local leadership in promoting projects that serve for the benefit of those with the most need.
With a goal to promote local employment and long term economic sustainability, Alas has also initiated numerous Kingdom business initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and teach small business skills. These include a popular Chili sauce called Afripica, a Disinfectant business , a carpentry shop and an Earth block production centre.
